AI in Construction: TH OWL and MID showcases Innovation at NRW.Tag in Cologne
On the weekend leading up to the 78th anniversary of North Rhine-Westphalia, the NRW Day in Cologne brought together organizations, institutions, and regions to celebrate and showcase their achievements. The Technische Hochschule Ostwestfalen-Lippe (TH OWL) proudly participated, presenting groundbreaking research at the booth of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Municipal Affairs, Building, and Digitalization (MHKBD).
The highlight of TH OWL’s exhibit was a Master’s thesis from the Integrated Design program by Yusuf Aykin. The project demonstrated how pixel-based image recognition, 3D point clouds, and GPT-4 natural language input can revolutionize robot control. This advanced integration allows for more accurate object recognition and segmentation, enhancing usability and efficiency in construction robotics.

Professor Yvonne-Christin Knepper-Bartel, Vice President for Education and Sustainability at TH OWL, emphasized the importance of this research:
“This work is a perfect example of how we explore digital manufacturing and construction at TH OWL. It underpins our vision for the planned Center for Sustainable Digital Construction (ZNDB) at the Creative Campus in Detmold. This center aims to future-proof the construction industry by driving sustainability and innovation.”
Professor Hans Sachs from TH OWL’s Detmold School of Design added:
“Aykin’s work highlights the potential for cost reduction in construction and opens doors to new, integrative design approaches. Artificial intelligence not only transforms processes but also enables sustainable and socially conscious building practices with alternative materials.”
The planned ZNDB will act as a living lab, exploring digitally controlled construction methods that drastically reduce resource consumption. It will foster collaboration across disciplines and with industry, aiming to address critical challenges like sustainability and workforce development.
TH OWL’s participation in NRW Day also highlighted the strong connection between teaching and research. The team was honored to welcome distinguished guests, including NRW’s Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst, Minister Nathanael Liminski, and Cologne Mayor Henriette Reker.
As NRW Day 2024 wrapped up, the TH OWL team expressed their gratitude to the MHKBD for the opportunity to showcase their innovative projects and vision for the future of construction. This milestone underscores the importance of supporting interdisciplinary research and collaboration to create transformative solutions in the building sector.
