About the project

Existing commercial space frame systems offer structural solutions, which has proven effective and economical for large span projects. Typically, current space frames systems consist of a repetition of a regular pattern, primarily due to the impossibility of resolving complex geometries and topologies with a limited number of standard nodes. As 3D-printing eliminates the incentive of using standard parts, the economic benefits of using a repetitive pattern is reduced.

The lecture aims to enhance the design flexibility, structural performance and aesthetic appearance of space frame structures using 3D printed nodes. The design process focuses mainly on the frame and the node. 3d printing enables the development of complex geometric structures without standardizing the elements. The nodes can be unique parts for an optimal development in terms of geometry and material. This design freedom presents challenges of designing the optimum geometric frame and node and also the systematic organization of the information and physical parts.
