WORKSHOP DESCIPTION

with Ozyegin University

Following its annual tradition, the Detmold School of Design held the “Detmolder Räume” week, featuring workshops and lectures by local and international experts. This year’s theme, “Re-Form Peace,” focused on recent global conflicts and explored how architects can help address such issues. Emphasizing resilience and adaptive re-use, the MID-FD organized the “Façade Re-Form” workshop in collaboration with academic partner Ozyegin University from Istanbul, Turkey.

Students conducted a case study by selecting a building from a provided database and evaluation its thermal performance, condensation risk, water tightness and acoustic performance based on set criteria.

Representing the B-Tech Lab, Lecturer and researcher Yagdir Çeliker Cenger led the workshop in Detmold, introducing students to multi-layered construction principles and enriching their understanding of curtain wall systems.

WORKSHOP RESULTS

The hands-on activity used a case study to bring theoretical concepts to practice – the extension at Kuchl Campus, Salzburg University of Applied Sciences, designed by the firm Dietrich | Untertrifaller Architekten.

The building includes an L-shaped glazed corridor, a foyer and art room on the ground floor, with seminar rooms and a library above. A reinforced concrete frame provides bracing, with cross-laminated timber and timber box elements spanning the spaces. Steel cutouts streamline ceiling services, while solid steel columns and silver fir cladding add warmth. The glazed façade includes solar shading and interior blinds, and the design follows passive house principles with high insulation and energy recovery..

The students used 3D models and technical drawings to build a 1:10 physical model showcasing opaque façade strategies. This hands-on process deepened their grasp of facade technologies and building physics.

The workshop began with a study of opaque wall layers. Students examined insulation materials, comparing their performance in different climates. They analyzed wall sections from Salzburg and Detmold to assess how design and materials respond to each city’s conditions, revealing both shared and distinct performance traits.
