MONOCAB DESIGN Brochure

Monocab Cabin Design Project Summary
The Monocab is an innovative rural transport solution designed to reactivate abandoned railway infrastructure. The cabin design balances strict engineering constraints (length, width, height) with user-centered flexibility and sustainability.
Key Design Principles
Rural Integration: Purpose-built for countryside contexts with generous curved windows for landscape viewing, multi-modal transport capacity (bicycles, wheelchairs), and natural material palette reflecting rural textures.
Sustainability: Followed Cradle to Cradle principles using biobased materials including natural fiber composite shell (flax, cork, biobased resin), moulded ash plywood furniture, recycled polyamide textiles, and renewable cork flooring—all selected from local suppliers.
Adaptive Interior: Unique flexible configuration where seats fold away to accommodate wheelchairs, bicycles, strollers, or luggage. Capacity adjusts from 4 to 6 adults with fold-out tables and additional seats.
Accessibility: Wide wheelchair-friendly seats, level boarding bridge, and generous door dimensions enabling easy wheelchair rotation and positioning.
Haptic Experience: Rich variety of textures (wood, cork, textile) provides sensory differentiation and connects to rural context, replacing smooth screens with tactile interfaces.
Unobtrusive Interfaces: Minimal displays integrated into design elements—LED identification tags in mirror band, touch-enabled panels matching textile patterns—deliver essential information without overwhelming the landscape experience.
Development
Designed 2021 with primarily digital collaboration due to constraints. Key partners: Greenboats (NFC shell), Becker Brakel (plywood), NUO design (cladding), AUNDE (textiles), Yachtkork (flooring).
