Digital Crafting dtmI 25

In Digital Tools and Methods I, MID and MArch students explore architectural sketching, three-dimensional modelling, AI-assisted image-making and digital fabrication. The winter semester 2025/26 course links digital models and physical prototypes through an iterative design process. This selection presents work from the first three assignments, moving from the connector to architectural imagery and a physical superstructure.

Task 1: Node

The starting point is a constructive node for an architectural structure. Students develop a three-dimensional connector in Rhino, considering how its geometry could be fabricated by cutting, forming or depositing material. Iterative modelling brings structural, functional, material, and aesthetic considerations into relation and establishes a foundation for the following assignments.

Task 2: Imagine with AI

Building on their node models, students create collages that imagine adaptive, extendable architectural systems. Rhino geometry and manual design decisions guide the use of AI-generated imagery. The assignment emphasises deliberate composition and control: the final image should communicate the student’s design intentions and document a dialogue between modelling, image generation and editing.

Task 3: Superstructure

The connector system is developed into a physical prototype for a structure that could frame, cover or extend an urban space. Students test materials and connections while refining their Rhino models, using approaches such as laser-cut panels, rods and 3D-printed components. The exercise makes the relationships between geometry, fabrication, assembly and material behaviour tangible.
